Grease your surface, grease your hands - LIBERALLY! This mixture will stick to everything and anything that isn't greased very well.

Also apply elbow grease as you knead, knead, knead until it forms to a dough-like consistency.

Coat your marshmallow formation with additional grease, then wrap tightly with saran wrap. Refrigerate overnight.

Here's what mine looks like:

1) Wake up panic-stricken at 4AM with an overwhelming sense of insignificance, but then fall back asleep because depression is exhausting.

2) Sleep in until 9:30AM, then stare at the ceiling for 20-30 minutes.

3) Let the dog outside to pee, poop and bark at passers-by.

4) Turn on KALX for eccentric, amazing and/or painfully annoying music while preparing breakfast: fried egg, black coffee with turbinado, toast with Earth Balance.

5) Eat breakfast in front of the computer while checking my 3 email accounts and then log-on to facebook, myspace, yelp, blogspot, fark in attempts to continue being in touch with the world.

6) Do #5 for 2-3 hours.

7) In addition, for 2-3 hours, feverishly scan Craigslist, Indeed, and Monster for a job, "any*" job!!

8) Decide to "do something with myself"

- Create perfectly aligned rows of light beige and dark beige carpet while vacuuming

- brush my teeth

- make the bed

- feed and walk the dog

- create natural household cleaners, especially one for the shower curtain

- do the dishes (only applies when they are piled up too high or if something smells)

- consider sweeping and dusting

9) Look at the clock once the door knob starts to turn - it's 4:30 and Tim's home!! YAY!

REPEAT x74 days... and counting...

Since March 9th, I formed a group called "The Walking Unemployed". Essentially, we are a group of people frustrated-with-the-job-market, bored-as-hell, can't-stand-this-weight-gained-sitting-on-my-ass-waiting-for-an-employer-to-call-back who want to meet similar minded people. We meet every weekday morning at 10:30 for coffee and a brisk 2-8 mile walk in various parts of Oakland. This group has saved my sanity by giving me reason to get up and get moving. I can insert this in between #4 and #5 on my list.

* with the exception of fast food service, telemarketing, live-in caregiving, tutoring, and envelope sealing.

This afternoon we payed our respects to one of our favorite spots in Oakland, the Parkway Theater. I first learned of the Parkway through my mom and dad, "They have couches, and you can order food!"

I was too young to go then. Hard to believe that was 12 years ago.

Moments there have been good (Grindhouse, Sensitivity Training, double date w/Mpho & Klaudia, Tim & Melissa's downtown Oakland MEGA DATE, etc.) and bad (grimey couches, flat beer, spilled beer, forgetting our food order, guy behind us farting during Choke, etc.), but here was a theater I didn't have to sneak a tall can into. Here was a theater I could catch a film I couldn't bare spending $12 on seeing (2 for 1 Wednesdays like WHAT!). Here was a theater I could do a little cross dressing and step out for a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show...

Next month, on April 18th, I will be "celebrating" during my 10 year high school reunion.

*gasp*

I cannot believe how much time has gone by, but at the same time, I greatly appreciate how far away I am from 10 years ago.

Now, I did not graduate from Carlmont High School in Belmont, California, but I did go there for half of my Sophomore year. Despite having not graduated from here, I do feel it somewhat necessary to attend since I did go to junior high with everyone from this class - Go Ralston Rams!

It will be quite interesting to see everyone again - how much they've grown, where they live now, how successful they've become (since that is what people care about, right?).

I'm very excited about this but totally dread it at the same time -especially the ordeal I must go through up until the reunion:

- lose weight... at least 10-15 pounds! Double that would be better, but totally unrealistic.

- grow taller.

- correct my posture. How embarrassing to still be slouching after all of these years!

- buy a cocktail dress. I was thinking a short, black dress with stilettos, but how ordinary... yet oh-so-sophisticated and sexy if done right!

- learn how to repeat, in a short but not too basic paragraph, the story of my fabulous life including all of my achievements along with all of the special components that make me who I am now.

*breathe*

So far I've come up with, "I like caring for sick animals, and I can place an IV catheter single-handedly. But enough about me..."

Basically, I know I will be judged on how I've chosen to live my life after high school. That, or no one will give me a second of their time. I know I was that girl in high school - artsy, strange, flamboyant, sarcastic, independent yet very easily influenced -- all of which contributed to my appeal with every clique. But would this "popularity" really stand for anything after all of these years? Or will the topic of coin trump over individuality? Will there be groups of yuppies standing around holding martini's discussing the latest in their over-indulgent luxury purchases, while others coo over baby pictures? Am I going to be the only one that still listens to The Smiths?

No matter, since I am happy to be exactly where I am (but if someone wants to buy me a BMW M3 Coupe', that's perfectly fine with me). I guess I'll just have to wait to see how this goes...

On February 23rd, I will be starting my 40-hour long externship at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. I got assigned today through the externship coordinator of my phlebotomy program. I am so thankful because this means I am closer to becoming a certified phlebotomist, which would provide me a unique career in healthcare.

After 6 years of being a veterinary technician, I have decided to make a slight career change from animal venipuncture to human venipuncture. This decision came after the disappointing and heart-breaking reality that my position at the Berkeley Humane Society would be terminated as of February 1st, 2009. In addition, practically everyone is being devastatingly impacted by the current state of the economy, that few veterinary hospitals are hiring. (I have this silly thing called standards which prevents me from working anywhere else other than an animal shelter or a holistic practice. I'm not in such a terrible financial condition just yet to work just anywhere.)

I've always really enjoyed the act of venipuncture, and know that the purpose is extremely important for diagnostics in patient care. Although I am crossing over from animal healthcare to human healthcare, I don't feel any differently about my goal, and that is, be the best and be the kindest.

I am plastering the words now: ANTHONY BOURDAIN'S VISIT TO THE PHILIPPINES AIRS FEBRUARY 16TH. Tune into the Travel Channel at 10pm that night.

I can see it now -

balut, adobo, sinigang, lechon... all the key foods of my people, and all the reason I became vegetarian at thirteen. Food is very much appreciated and respected, which is comforting in a sense for the animals that are used in every dish. But really, Filipinos use animals in everything that is eaten. You'll see during the show.

Filipinos love to eat, I mean, really lub it. I'm excited to see how Philippine cuisine is portrayed on the show. I hope it's all done in good taste (harhar!).

To this day, personally, I must say that 2008 has proven to be the most depressing, most pathetic year of this decade. As I type, I reflect back to every heart-wrenching experience that has taken place this year, and I cannot think of anything more than the urgency to get this year over with already.
I am eager for the upcoming new year for the chance to feel revived hope and prosperity. And with that said, 2009 is going to make it all fine!

Gutom ako is Tagalog for,"I'm hungry" - and yes, I am! I've got a craving for some warm Filipino food. If only my mom were in town to come over and cook for me! I love my mom's cooking so much. I love that she gladly alters predominately pork-heavy Filipino dishes to be vegetarian, despite her "ai nako" while doing so.

Tonight, I will attempt to make Pinakbet - one of my favorite Filipino dishes, reminding me of my childhood and satisfying my belly. I've never made this before. I googled a recipe just to find the main components, so I can attempt it for myself.

I am very impressed with the outcome of my first attempt at Pinakbet because it was delicious! It perfumed the house with a wonderful aroma and got my mouth watering. My sister came over and we talked about when we were young and how much we love okra.

I separated a small portion (whoa, I feel like my mom) and added shrimp (whoa, if mom could see me now, she wouldn't believe it!). Tim enjoyed the meal. He didn't like the fact that he had to peel the shrimp while eating, but:

1) It's enough that I cooked the shrimp

and

2) Filipinos eat with their hands anyway, so he got the full experience!

It was fun cooking a "new" meal for dinner. I loved that I was able to share this with Tim, who is the best at being so open to trying new things - now, if only he'd get on the Kombucha train with me!

This past Wednesday, Devin went to see the orthopedic surgeon for his second set of post-surgery radiographs. He came out from the Treatment room smiling and walking on all four paws - he's free from his cast!

Oh, what a sweet relief to know that I don't have to do weekly bandage changes on him anymore, and also to know that he can get back to being a rambunctious puppy! He's been jumping around and dancing, you can tell he's so happy!

He's got some severe muscular atrophy, but it's nothing a a few extra laps around the block can't fix. As a matter of fact, it'll be good for ALL of us to do extra laps.

A vivid recollection:

When I was a kid, I really wanted a Kid Sister doll. Instead, my mom rented a movie. My whole family and I sat in my mom's room and watched Child's Play. Horrified, I watched a talking doll "come to life" and murder people. But what I remember the most is my little sister, Megan, curled up in a ball on the bed with her eyes tightly shut and her fingertips plugging her ears, trying to make the movie disappear. It was so sad and funny at the same time. Aw, I love my family, but seeing them scared is so entertaining.

Earlier this month, "Horror icon Chucky ran amok in Times Square for his 20th birthday."

I never wanted another doll ever again. And when my mom told me to water the plants in the garden and to pay special care to the cabbages because if I was good they'd grow up to be Cabbage Patch dolls, I never abided.

Dolls are scary.

I absolutely love the bag that you made for me. It is so durable and the pockets are plentiful, which helps as I tend to lug everything with me (multiple shades of lip gloss, too many pens, Devin's snacks, ipod, several bottles of scented antibacterial hand-sanitizers, etc).

You should know that I've received many compliments on it's colors, but mostly it is complimented on it's amazingly fine craftsmanship. I love showing it off in all of it's glorious ways such as, "Look, it even has a keyring clip!"

I used the bag as my primary beach bag while in Kaua'i. Once returning to the mainland and the redundancy of a work schedule, I placed a bottle of fruit juice in the bag. Later that day, I reached in the bag for my juice and found sand stuck to the bottle because of the condensation. I felt like I was magically whisked away to Kauai with the sand and the fruit and my bag. It was a special moment.

Anyway, thank you so very much for making such a wonderful gift for me. Here are some pictures of the bag. Sure, they aren't showing in detail, but they're "action shots"!

Early Sunday mornings were once occupied by the droning commute to and from Miss Betty's house in East Oakland, where I would go to provide treatment for her starting to fail renal glands. This no longer happens on Sunday's. Instead, it happens on Tuesday mornings.

Gladly now, each Sunday morning I've succumbed to oversleeping (whoopie, 7:30 instead of 6:00). I indulge in the Temescal Farmer's Market, where I pick and choose carefully the best looking bunch of greens at each stand. I take Devin to the Hardy Dog Park and plug my ears with every BART that howls above me. But best of all, I have my breakfast sitting down in the wonderful silence that is my home on Sunday mornings.

This morning, I had 2 slices of toast smeared generously with Earth Balance and organic raspberry preserve. I didn't feel like cleaning the espresso machine, so I cracked open a Diet Coke instead.

Yes, that's how I roll.

As I ate, I was searching online for inspiring egg recipes, I came across this blog: simply breakfast

I want to live here and have these beautiful breakfasts every day, but because that won't happen, this blog will just be an addition to my Sunday mornings.

After only having the 1990 Toyota Camry I named Camrun ("17 years old and still running!") for one month, I'm sad to say that she has died. She is now sitting idle in East Oakland where bottom feeders will rip, pull, tear from her any part that is valuable until she's naked and empty, like a turkey's carcass on Thanksgiving Day.

She was a good car, and I'm thankful we had the time together, even though it was short lived.

We are saddened by our recent loss of our foster kitten, Jinx. After being in our hearts and home for the past 2 weeks, he was quietly put to sleep this morning once being diagnosed with a pericardial effusion; a diagnosis that has no cure, and symptomatic treatment is expensive and dreary.

I brought him home unaware of his delicate physical state, because I just knew Tim would be touched and enlightened by his presence- sure enough, he was. Tim immediately grew fond of Jinx, and the same for Jinx with Tim. The two of them bonded like glue. Jinx has been witnessed giving Tim kisses on his face, and also climbing great couch heights just to finish Tim's bowl of cereal milk.

He was only 11 weeks old, but was the most powerful and loving soul in the entire kitten kingdom.

Jinx, darling kitten with the stunningly blue eyes, you will be missed, my friend.

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah!

The weather couldn't of been better during this long weekend! We took advantage of the sun's strong rays, and hopped in the car for an adventure across the Bay Bridge.

For lunch, we had the pleasure of trying a new restaurant in San Francisco called B Star- where we chowed and licked our lips with delight. Then we took Devin to Baker Beach, laid out our blanket and slipped into a blissful state of mind.

So, I haven't been to Great America since I was a Ralston Ram strapped with a season pass. I would go here with packs of friends and ride the Tidal Wave over and over again, then proceed to hit up Top Gun for consecutive rides.
I've gotten old and rickety since then, kinda like the Grizzly.
This time around, the Grizzly was the most pleasurable ride. It went up and down and was fast enough to thrill and was also compassionate enough not to go in upside-down loops. I really, really liked that.

So, not much has changed in the past 11 or so years here at Great America. Same fountains. Same food court. Same props used to induce excitement while in line for Top Gun (now Flight Deck), minus the cheesy music and pukey love scenes between Maverick and Charlie.
It was still possible to go here with my boyfriend and have a good time on a Monday afternoon. The main reason our blast-to-the-past was as wonderful as it was, is all thanks to the adolescent nuisances leaving their attitudes at home. Kids were being courteous and stuff- it was so weird.
Words to the wise:
Oh, old wise one, if you go to Great America as an adult, remember, you are an adult and your stomachs can't handle that kind of food anymore. Pack a lunch if you can sneak it in or get your hand stamped and eat your lunch in your car. It's so worth it. We were dumb and didn't do this. Instead we had to choose from dehydrated and disgusting looking pizza and fries or a (ever so) slightly more palatable looking "cheddar cheese filled" pretzel. The cheese is comparable to that of the stuff you smear on a cracker with a red stick, and the center was frozen. But this wasn't nearly as bad as the salad I saw at the cafe near the Spongebob ride- disintegrating cucumbers and brown iceberg lettuce. YUCK!

Anyway, we had a really good time. Now, back to adult life... well, hello Jameson.

With only hunger pains in my stomach and food on my mind, I stood in front of the refrigerator, door wide open, and scanned each of its contents in search of an idea for a meal. I stood there a very long time. I grabbed a cold Honest Tea and sipped it while standing in front of the open fridge. It was horrible how much time and energy I was wasting while Tim and I were "starving"; how could I be so inert?

I got on the couch and asked Tim if we should just order food to be delivered. Chinese food, Indian food, pizza... oh my! We need to stop the habit of rapid calorie consumption with minimal calorie exertion, especially after getting food delivered.

I went back into the kitchen and pulled out of the fridge all of the glorious vegetables we had in our crisper- red and yellow peppers, broccoli, zucchini, corn, and carrots. I chopped them up in big chunks along with an onion and some large garlic cloves, then threw them onto the grill. I also sliced up a cube of tofu, wrapped it in several layers of paper towels, and placed it under a heavy plate to get the tofu as dry as possible.

In a small bowl, I whisked together a few tablespoons of sweet chili sauce and a heaping mound of Sriracha. I placed the tofu on the grill and cooked it about 4 minutes on each side, just to get those beautiful grill marks. I then coated the tofu with the sauce and grilled it again for a minute.

I served everything with a little rice. We sat in front of the television, chomped joyfully and smiled when we realized we saved ourselves some cash.
